Technology Terms
Okay, so this week we learnt about the different terms that people use everyday in relation to technology. Alot of these words I already know and often hear, but I never really thought about their true meaning. Others words were completely new to me. Learning more technology terminology was something that I wanted to learn in this course and this week was the beginning of that learning experience.
Some terms I already knew but learnt their actual true definition include: World Wide Web (www), and the internet. I have always thought that these two terms meant the same thing, but turns out that they are different. The internet is a series of computers connected to each other. While the World Wide Web on the other hand is actually a universal database, it is the actual documents, graphics etc that one can find on the internet.
I already understand the internet jargon mentioned in the study guide and the use of search engines and browsing. However I learnt that there are some special search engines for kids, which I did not know and which I hope to use with students in the future. I’ll also be curious to see if the children at the school where I do my prac use any of these search engines and see how effective the children find them. I believe that the other sites listed in the study guide could be valuable sources for teaching and studying primrary education and I look forward to using them more in my studies and profession.
I also learnt about internet protocol (IP) which is basically a unique computer address. Routers was also a new term to me; routers are bridges between networks that connect networks.
I think that it is really important that as a teacher I know these terms so that I can understand how to work with computers better, having a good understanding of how things work helps one work better in that area in general. If I am working in a school and the computer teacher tells me what the technical problems are then I will know what they are talking about and why it might be happening as well as fix any problems with my own computer and the computers in my classroom.
First Blog entry!
ICT competency test Welcome to my Blog! This is the very first blog that I have ever written. I have to admit that computers is definitely not a strength of mine, but I look forward to this workshop in hope that it will improve my ICT skills a lot more. I understand that as a teacher to such a computer literate generation, my students will probably always be ahead of me, hopefully with the help of this course I will be able to keep up with my students, helping them with computer related classes and presenting classes with the use of technology.
I found that my score on the competency test was quite average if not below average and although I use a computer in my everyday life, I discovered that my understanding of computers is limited and my regular use of a computer is usually for recreational purposes, such as myspace, msn and surfing.
All areas in the test in which I gained level three or above I would like to advance my current knowledge in. I learnt that I am weak in the following areas: Constructivist Learning, Graphic Organisers, Problem based Learning and Problem based Learning. I look forward to learning about all the programs in these areas, some of them I had never heard of before.
In this unit I also hope to gain better knowledge of Information and technology terminology, as well as become a better user of Power Point presentations. There are lots of technology related terms that I hear but do not always know exactly what they mean or what some abbreveations stand for. I think that PowerPoint is a fascinating program which I have some knowledge of but would love to learn more about so that I can use it (and hopefully many other programs) in my teaching and education studies.
I look forward to the outcomes of these workshops and trust they will be successful.
